Manifest Your Destiny

Manifest Destiny

I remember learning about Manifest Destiny in high school or rather being assigned to read about it.  History was not my favorite subject by any stretch of the imagination but I always liked what Manifest Destiny represented.

The phrase “Manifest Destiny” is most often associated with the territorial expansion of the United States from 1815 to 1860. This era, from the end of the War of 1812 to the beginning of the American Civil War, has been called the “Age of Manifest Destiny.” During this time, the United States expanded to the Pacific Ocean— thus the lyrics in the Star Spangled Banner “from sea to shining sea”—largely defining the borders of the continental United States as they are today.

Manifest Destiny is best described as the great experiment of liberty.  Basically, it was a widely held attitude and belief in the mission to expand during the 19th Century, an attitude that helped fuel western settlement.  It was a Movement, an intangible ideology that created American history.  And this philosophy created a Nation.  It was a time that represented opportunity and potential wealth.

The philosophy, belief and attitude of Manifest Destiny was a great example of Human Potential; the concept of discovery and expansion.  In the Science of Mind textbook the philosopher Dr. Ernest Holmes supports the belief and attitude of Human Potential from a Spiritual perspective and it teaches the concept of self-discovery and personal evolution (expansion).

He teaches about the co-creative process by which our individual lives unfold.  He makes it clear that we are a part of this process and that it is not something that happens to us rather something that happens through us and as us.  It is important for us to know that the creative process is always happening.  And that we are a part of the creative process.  How so?  Everything that is happening is happening through us not to us.  During the time of manifest destiny the expansion to the Pacific Ocean happened through the settlers as they forged their way westward.  They didn’t wake up one day to find that the territory had been expanded.  Expansion happened through them as they picked up and moved and built homes and created a life for themselves.

Today we can adopt the same attitude and belief.  We can simply choose to set our sights on living an authentic life of joy, love, peace and inner wellness that includes success, abundance, prosperity, health and well-being. But, we must engage and become action-oriented to create this experience, if we are to have it. To live the lives we have dreamed of, we are going to have to roll up our sleeves and participate in the co-creative process we call our lives.  This may call for us to do some things we have never done before.  We may have to pick up and move completely from one mindset or ideology to another; we may have to develop a new perspective.  We may have to press westward, even when others choose to sit and stay put.  It may mean we will be afraid and unsure of our selves because we don’t know what we don’t know.  But just like the early settlers, with great courage, a positive expectancy, attention to our intention we are sure to experience success.

So, what can you do to Manifest Your Destiny?

  1. Get quiet. Practice silence daily to tune in to your heart’s desires
  2. Get started. Honor your heart’s desires by taking action towards your goals every day.
  3. Be reflective. Pay attention to your attitude, your thoughts, your beliefs, your everyday conversation with yourself and the way you treat yourself and others and make changes when you necessary.
  4. Be open and willing to change.
  5. Be determined to continue.

I like to think of Manifest Destiny as one of the greatest examples of popular imagination or collective consciousness at its best.  It was a co-creative process that was executed with intention to demonstrate what we now know as the United States of America.  This philosophy of Manifest Destiny can be applied to your personal life today because after all you are creating your very own history.  This concept of discovery can be applied to your life on your journey of self-discovery that requires you to remember the truth of your being and to not lose sight of how amazing you truly are.  This great experiment of liberty supports the principle that we are each free to manifest the desires of our hearts.  I encourage you to adopt the attitude, the belief, the curiosity, the commitment, the determination inspired by Manifest Destiny.
